Bone marrow registry process? donating not looking for a match myself?

I'm thinking about joining the bone marrow registry, but I'm nervous about the process and the actual procedure. If you're someone's match, how does payment and everything with the insurance work? How bad is the pain during and after the aspiration? I've read different things on a couple websites, just want to hear some firsthand accounts. Thanks!
